Despite the provocative title, “Bondage” is as far from a schlocky dirty movie as you can get. The movie is based on a play by acclaimed writer David Henry Hwang, whose “M. Butterfly” won a Tony for Best Play. It’s a witty, fast-paced, thoroughly entertaining exploration of love, intimacy, race, stereotypes, loneliness and so much more.If you only know Paige Davis as the perky and personable host of home makeover show “Trading Spaces” you won’t recognize her here. (Yes, that’s her on the DVD cover.). The demanding role is a tour de force for Davis, putting her formidable acting chops on display. Ryun Yu also nails the many layers of his character, showing a sweet vulnerability and dignity even in the most absurd situations.Director Esquire Jauchem packs a lot into this unusual, insightful, highly enjoyable little film. You’ll want to watch it at least twice to get every slyly clever moment.
